METALLICA In Christchurch: TV Report Available

According to The New Zealand Herald, student volunteers who helped in the clean-up efforts after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck 40 kiometers west of Christchurch, the capital of New Zealand, were rewarded with tickets to a METALLICA gig.

METALLICA's two concerts at CBS Canterbury arena sold out in a matter of minutes but in wake of the devastating earthquake on September 4 the band and promoter Michael Coppel wanted to help.

They had donated about 300 suite tickets for the student volunteers and emergency services to attend the concert.

"You can call it therapy, you can call it whatever you like. We're there to help, man. We're there to bring the party. We're bringing the metal to Christchurch," bassist Robert Trujillo told Stuff.co.nz.

Trujillo said the band were "humbled and thrilled" to play for their South Island fans.

"We're very excited and can't wait to get there. I know you guys have been through a lot and we're going to make it all good," Trujillo said.

Christchurch fan Andrea Grom started a Facebook campaign to "Bring METALLICA to Christchurch", with more than 20,000 people joining her.

Trujillo said the campaign "added fuel to the fire in a positive way".

He said the band had the option of going to Asia "but it just seemed like there was so much enthusiasm in Christchurch coming at us, it was something we couldn't pass up".

"After the earthquake, it makes even more sense for us to be in Christchurch now."
